Mandy Zhang Art, in collaboration with Silian Gallery, is proud to present Better Than Yesterday, a compelling duo exhibition featuring the works of Chinese artist Li Yin and Norwegian artist Kaja Stumpf. The exhibition is scheduled to run from 23 February to 05 April 2024 at Silian Gallery, located on the prestigious King's Road. Better Than Yesterday brings together the contrasting yet complementary artistic visions of Li Yin and Kaja Stumpf, engaging with themes of memory, identity, and the passage of time. Through their distinctive practices, the artists explore the impact of societal forces on individuality and the transformative power of art in reclaiming personal narratives. Li Yin's poignant series draws inspiration from the Yinchang Valley of his childhood—a site of joy and camaraderie now lost in the aftermath of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. His work acts as a bridge to the past, capturing the ephemeral nature of memory and the universal longing for a return to simpler times. Through expansive landscapes that stretch beyond the canvas, Li invites viewers into a reflective journey through the remnants of memory and the resilience of the human spirit. In contrast, Kaja Stumpf's intricate compositions zoom into the personal realm, using her family album as a foundation for exploring the depths of memory and emotion. Her work on the ground floor offers an intimate counterpoint to Li's broader vistas, highlighting the rich tapestry of personal history and the selective nature of memory. Stumpf's practice is a deep dive into the ways we curate our past, with each painting serving as a window into the soul's inner workings. The exhibition takes a dramatic turn on the lower ground floor, where Stumpf's inverted space presents a series of works that challenge the viewer's perception through altered colours and inverted imagery. This bold exploration of colour and form invites a reexamination of familiar memories, suggesting the existence of multiple truths and perspectives within our own narratives. Better Than Yesterday is an invitation to embark on a reflective odyssey through the landscapes of memory and identity, guided by the sensitive brushwork of Li Yin and Kaja Stumpf. The exhibition is a testament to the power of art in navigating the complexities of the self and the ever-changing world around us. Mandy Zhang Art and Silian Gallery warmly welcome all to experience this evocative exploration of time, memory, and the quest for authenticity. Join us in witnessing the convergence of two unique artistic journeys, each echoing the shared human desire to find solace in the echoes of our origins and the true self.
