Jin Han: Amber Nebulae

30 July - 14 August 2024
Mandy Zhang Art is delighted to present "Amber Nebulae", an evocative exhibition showcasing the latest works of Chinese artist Jin Han, from July 30 to August 13, 2024. This exhibition, born from Jin's three-month artist residency at Glenfiddich's Whisky Distillery in Scotland, explores the deep interconnections between the craft of whisky making and the mysteries of the universe, expressed through painting and woodcut.

"Amber Nebulae" captures Jin's profound engagement with the Scottish landscape and the distillery's time-honoured processes. The exhibition features a series of artworks that reflect on the amber hues of whisky and its celestial resemblances, presenting a narrative that weaves together the essence of whisky and the expansive beauty of the cosmos. Each piece invites the viewer to delve into a visual journey of transformation and discovery.

During his residency, Jin was captivated by the intricate relationship between the land, the people, and their craft. This exhibition integrates iconic symbols of whisky making, such as barrels and casks, with expansive astronomical themes. Jin envisions these elements alongside the architectural grandeur of stone castles and ancient manuscripts of early astronomers, drawing parallels between the cyclical nature of whisky ageing and the orbital paths of celestial bodies. The imaginative fusion highlights the deep connections between the craft of whisky production, the enduring structures built by humans, and the mysteries of the cosmos. Through his artwork, viewers are welcomed to explore the intricate relationships that link the land, its people, and their timeless crafts to the broader universe.

The artist also experiments with integrating whisky into his paint, adding a distinctive textural depth to his artwork. By weaving elements of whisky craftsmanship with celestial and historical imagery, Jin encourages a reflection on the cyclical nature and interconnectedness that define human insight and artistic expression.
