GREY (b. 1997, China) is a street artist based in China. He started graffitiing in 2010, and his work quickly spread across China, South East Asia, and Russia. He has worked with reputable brands such as Nike, Volkswagen, and Casio. In 2018, GREY founded OUTLINE street art studio. Since then, he has been using US dollars as his main creative medium. The "Tycoon" series, GREY explores the influence and power of money and pop culture in our society. The artist takes the iconic image of the US dollar bill and transforms it by replacing George Washington's head with characters from popular cartoons. By doing so, GREY creates a unique fusion of two seemingly disparate elements: money and pop culture. The result is a striking commentary on the way in which our culture is dominated by the influence of money, and how popular media and entertainment are used to maintain this power structure. Through his work, GREY invites the viewer to question the relationship between money and culture and to consider how the two intersect in ways that are often hidden from view. By combining the symbols of power and entertainment, he highlights the ways in which the control of the economy and culture are intertwined, and how both are wielded by those in positions of authority and influence. GREY ‘s work presents a powerful statement on the role of money and media in shaping our society, and an evocative exploration of the complex dynamics that underlie these forces.
